Tea & Contemplation

Being Tea + Adam Grossi

Tea & Contemplation is a podcast + practice space for exploring our inner world, through the lens of tea and yogic philosophy. June 2022 update: This series is now retired in weekly format, after running for over a year and a half, but we're leaving these lovely archive sessions up for your enjoyment. For future new podcasts and projects with tea meditation, subscribe to Being Tea's newsletter, available at https://beingtea.com/ Every episode begins with a real time guided meditation with tea, followed by discussion on this month's themed topic of exploration. Your hosts are artist, writer and yoga teacher, Adam Grossi, and tea educator and founder of Being Tea, Suzette Hammond. This podcast is for anyone who is curious about meditation and is craving quiet thinking time and space to process emotions. NOTES FOR PREPARING THE TEA: - We use the bowl method, a versatile and very accessible traditional method for enjoying tea, for every session. - Just a pinch of loose leaf tea + hot water in an open mug or small bowl with no strainer necessary. (This appears on the podcast cover art.) - We brew tea together during the session in real time, so simply just have your kettle heating just before you come sit down for practice and you’ll be all set. read less

Clearing, ep 3 of 3
Our theme for the month of March is "CLEARING." Given the deep weight the world is carrying at the moment, it feels like an appropriate place to pause and just consider how we practice peace within ourselves. How we deescalate from within. How we clear and make space for listening, restoration, grieving. So, we'll be spending March contemplating the practice of clearing with our tea and with our inner quiet. Come sit with us and be in community. We're back after a little spring break last week! And today, our monthly guest, jess young chang, joins us to lead a contemplation about clearing as both a form of letting go (a verb) and also a space (a noun). jess is currently pursuing her Master's at Harvard Divinity School, with a focus on the nature of the body and the Divine in both Tantric and Christian traditions. She is also a yoga teacher, as well as women's health advocate, from Chicago, IL. You can reach Jess at http://www.adevotedyogi.com/. ---Tea & Contemplation is hosted by Suzette (‘Sooz’) Hammond - tea educator, tea contemplative practitioner, and founder of Being Tea - and Adam Grossi - artist, writer and yoga teacher. They are both based in Chicago, IL. You can connect with Adam on IG @adamgrossi and Sooz on IG @beingtea.Tea & Contemplation is recorded as a live studio audience session, every Friday morning at 8am CST. Attendees of the live session get to participate in our lovely group discussion and sharing circle afterward (which is unrecorded), for communal support in the practice. So if you like what you experience here and think you might also enjoy practicing with community, please join us! Tickets to join live sessions can be found at beingtea.com/teaandcontemplation. Deep Listening, ep 4 of 4
Our theme for February in Tea & Contemplation is "Deep Listening." Winter is a very inward, reflective time of year, and perhaps a time where we are extra prone to absorbing excessive messages. Whether they originate internally from our own insecurities, or externally because we're just living in a period of nearly debilitating intake of everything, all the time. This month, Adam and I sit with how to filter and tune out the noise, learning to tend to this inner monologue as a garden - one that needs frequent, attentive weeding. Today's session is one for sitting with what we're hearing, even in our most painful moments, while honoring the call of our own sovereignty. (the recording of this session takes place as news of the invasion of Ukraine is breaking.) We invite back into our space our friend and regular guest host, jess young chang, to lead our contemplation. jess is currently pursuing her Master's at Harvard Divinity School, with a focus on the nature of the body and the Divine in both Tantric and Christian traditions. Deep Listening, ep 3 of 4
Our theme for February in Tea & Contemplation is "Deep Listening." Winter is traditionally held as the season when our ears are at their greatest sensitivity, as our other senses are resting in the absence of normal seasonal stimulation. It's also of course a very inward, reflective time of year, and perhaps a time where we are extra prone to absorbing unhelpful messages. Whether they originate internally from our own insecurities, or externally because we're just living in a period of debilitating noise. This month, Adam and I sit with how to filter and tune out the noise, learning to tend to this inner monologue as a garden - one that needs frequent, attentive weeding. In today's session, we talk about accessing that deep listening through physical practice, and how we handle and sit with what we encounter in that space. ---Tea & Contemplation is recorded as a live studio audience session, every Friday morning at 8am CST. Making a Place, ep 4 of 4

Making a Place, ep 4 of 4
Our January theme is "Making a Place." Covid continues to impose intense restrictions on our ability to travel and to commune with the world outside of our homes. For many of us, it is a time of confinement, of being stuck in place. Psychologist and Holocaust survivor Victor Frankl posited that, “Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.”Today, we close this series with a contemplation on what home means - to come home, to be of a place. And what it means to gain and lose places and homes, too. This week's practice features our regular guest and dear friend here in the tea space, jessica young chang. Jess is currently pursuing her Master's at Harvard Divinity School, with a focus on the nature of the body and the Divine in both Tantric and Christian traditions. And how might we find nourishment in the art of placing, arranging, and intentional configuration? Today's subject is how we care for the items and conditions of our space, and how this care itself is a way of understanding our own needs, to be seen, to be appreciated, and to live in wholeheartedness. Our intention in this series is to situate ourselves anew: to recognize the possibility inherent in our surroundings, and this most sacred place we call the body. We hope you enjoy!---Tea & Contemplation is hosted by Suzette (‘Sooz’) Hammond - tea educator, tea contemplative practitioner, and founder of Being Tea - and Adam Grossi - artist, writer and yoga teacher –both based in Chicago, IL. Darkness, ep 3 of 5

Darkness, ep 3 of 5
Our December theme is DARKNESS. In a culture obsessed with light, darkness is burdened with our abundant fears and hostilities. If we are to integrate, to ground into the fullness of who we really are, we must release our projections and step into the dark. The unseen. The unknown, and the unknowable. The shadow, and the veil. Darkness, the ground from which we all emerge. In honor of our theme, there are no weekly subjects this month. We cannot see the path ahead; we'll make it as we go. We encourage you to practice each session in darkness / by candlelight, too, if possible (even if just turning off one overhead light). This week's practice features our regular guest and dear friend here in the tea space, jessica young chang. Dismantling Discipline, ep 4 of 4: "Centering Pleasure"
Our November theme is Dismantling Discipline. We are in a time when people are trying SO hard, all the time, and it never seems to be enough. And this conflict gets refracted and twisted around in our practice spaces, too - an area in our life where acceptance, curiosity, and nurturing are supposed to be the guiding principles. Not rigidity. So what can we do? Can we move away from dominance and more toward dedication? Let's sit with tea and our breathing, and talk together. This week's session: "What do you want to do? Centering Pleasure" Our cultural conditioning often paints pleasure and discipline as contrasting forces. But what if they are actually best suited to complement and support each other?---Tea & Contemplation is hosted by Suzette (‘Sooz’) Hammond - tea educator, tea contemplative practitioner, and founder of Being Tea - and Adam Grossi - artist, writer and yoga teacher –both based in Chicago, IL.
